1. Convey to Ḥuṣayn, when you come to him,

    a reply and an admonition for you within it,

  2. as a messenger, if you possess good judgment,

    perceptive and discerning about what befalls you.

  3. And among the best things men undertake

    is a wise man's counsel for one who accepts it.

  4. So do not be like the creature that drew out

    a knife from her cloven hooves, or with her mouth.

  5. Then a slaughterer advanced upon her with it;

    and whoever Shaʿūb—Death—spares for a day comes to her.

  6. So her pot, containing her limbs, kept

    spurring the maidservant on—or roasting her.

  7. For if you refuse and will not desist,

    and do not regard this as akin to counsel,

  8. I will make you swallow bitter ṣāb sap; and the bitter plant murār

    and ṣāb were of old a loathsome drink.
