1. If you seek someone to bear a trust,

Leave Nafiʿ aside and find someone who can bear it.

  2. For the young man is a cunning liar, and he

Has a wicked soul that its friend detests.

  3. Whenever one day he is alone with a trust,

It is embezzled entirely, or a portion of it is.

  4. Whenever he does not find it in the morning, he

Will be left bankrupt without it, or its market will stagnate.

  5. And he destroys it until it becomes a trifle,

And every evil that pursues it overtakes it.

  6. Yet of all men he keeps his fat the longest,

Just as every fat dog is a habitual thief among its kind.
