1. Who is there in whose brotherhood and affection

I could rejoice after your affection or brotherhood?

  2. When the ill-wishers speak to us tomorrow,

and their eyes glance toward me and toward you—

  3. they have been unsettled, after fine fellowship,

by estrangement between us and an unmistakable parting—

  4. will you show them what they desire, and do

of that what is praised and what is deemed shameful?

  5. Or hold fast to the bond with a sincere friend,

pure in brotherhood, whose like is not to be cast aside?

  6. Whichever you do, there will always remain

in my breast affection for you that never departs.
