1. Abu Bahr is the most generous of men

toward us, second only to the clan of Abu al-Mughira.

  2. By your life, I have not risen with a worthless soul,

beset by weakness or low ambitions.

  3. Time’s vicissitudes have indeed left us, in him,

a trustworthy brother whose benefits are many.

  4. His goodness is near at hand; he is easygoing, not rough,

    and roughness prevents some good.

  5. You recognized that we have a rightful claim,

on which we confidently rely, and are brothers and neighbors,

  6. and people exposed to neglect; you proved better

in that plight than friends and clan.

  7. For you, as far as I know—and every soul

has visible outward aspects, yet a hidden inner nature—

  8. surely have a heart compassionate toward kin,

and an eye discerning whatever it reaches.

  9. By your life, God has not filled you with a soul

with greed within it, nor with an evil soul.

  10. But you are no ill-tempered, harsh man,

nor a weakling beset by faintheartedness.

  11. With the finest nature and the finest character

you were created; so may God grant you still more abundance.

  12. It was as though, when we came to him, we alighted

    beside a lush, rain-soaked meadow.
