By your life, Marsu‘ of Mujalid’s clan,
You certainly mangled your reply to me the day we met.
You tell me that I am old, and indeed I am
Old—but what has turned your hair gray?
Is it old age? For gray hair is a young man’s eventual lot—
So tell us—or was it sorcery that struck you?
By my life, you have indeed married her to a kinsman,
Blameless and noble, hating what aroused your suspicions.
And I was told he gifted a fat camel for slaughter;
He would have completed the gifts had he renewed your clothes.
