1. Hear now, you two: convey a message from me to Ḥuṣayn.

For you have indeed severed the last of your bonds of friendship.

  2. You saw an age in which people severed among themselves

the bonds of justice, and you followed that example.

  3. And had I, when told that you were an official

in Maysan, giving to people from wealth not your own,

  4. asked you, or hinted at the affection between us,

some of that would surely have been my rightful due.

  5. And the one I had sent told me that you merely

took my letter with your left hand, turning away.

  6. You looked at its address, then cast it away,

as you would cast away a worn-out sandal from among your sandals.

  7. I thought, when my letter reached you, hinting

at your bounty, that my hope there would not be lost.

  8. What Nuʿaym ibn Maʿsūd did befits him,

and what you do likewise befits you.
