Have you not seen what lay between me and Ibn Amir
of affection? Foxes have urinated upon it.
And what remains of the affection between him and me
is as though it had never been—and time holds wonders.
If a person loves you only reluctantly,
you will see in his character what he struggles to suppress.
So distance is better than closeness that brings harm,
and there is no good in what the reproacher deems too little.
For reproaching him every day is a disgrace,
yet I am forsaken if I do not reproach him.
So leave him: severing ties with a person is the least of losses,
and a resolute person has many paths across the earth.
