1. The oryx-eyed beauty of al-Liwā has wronged me in her judgment,

    and has not spared my heart the pain of her estrangement.

  2. Was affection forgotten wherever she went?

    Yet she and I, whenever the goblets made their rounds,

  3. shared conversation that unbound the knots of care.

    When I was alone with her, she drew aside her veil

  4. and said, “Here is my mouth—sip wine from it;

    and take what follows: listen to words from me—

  5. companionship more delightful than boon companions,

    and the outpouring of a passion gentler than the breeze.”
