1. If my soul falls ill, you are its physicians.

And if one day it thirsts, you are its sweet water.

  2. From you it has affection whose fame has spread,

and the caravan has spoken of it, its camel-drivers chanting.

  3. What, then, is this report a faction has embellished,

which its misguided members fabricated about me this morning?

  4. In their ignorance, they seek to make me forget my love for you,

yet never could souls forget their very life.

  5. If people have attributed an offense to me,

they, by the true Imam, are indeed its perpetrators.

  6. And none insults a person but one who passes on

vipers of speech, among which their charmers remain.

  7. If news from a transgressor comes suddenly,

verify it, for piety is the soul's adornment.

  8. After my allegiance, am I to become an enemy today?

Ah, what a predicament, in which its guides are bewildered!

  9. And this is nothing but a fabrication by Mistah,

who slandered; in my eyes, its tale-bearers are the worst of people.

  10. They reported about me what I never uttered,

and the bane of reports is none other than their transmitters.
