1. O you who in honor rose above Kaywān (Saturn),

    and ascended to a station beneath which stand the two luminaries;

  2. who judged the subjects with justice, taking

    them along a path laid down by the two ʿUmars.

  3. The ways of the noble, as I have known, are that when

    a servant wrongs them, they respond with forgiveness.

  4. Everything is bearable except the gloating of my enviers,

    when one So-and-so meets another So-and-so.

  5. Out of envy, they blackened the whiteness of my record

    with ornate words and falsehood.

  6. Will you not shield me from the foes, remembering

    the saying of the man of letters, ʿIṣāba al-Jurjānī:

  7. “You tore down my structure and rebuilt me

    with your own hands, in the finest form of construction.

  8. So it falls to you to straighten me whenever I am bent by

    some crookedness, for you yourself were the builder.”
