أذل فيا حبذا من مدل
ومن ظالم لدمي مستحل
I abase myself—oh, how dear is the one who abases me,
I am meek—what a delightful, proudly coy one,
and the tyrant who deems my blood lawful to shed!
And a tyrant who deems my blood lawful to shed!
إذا ما تعزز قابلته
بذل وذلك جهد المقل
Whenever he holds himself aloof, I meet him
Whenever he grows proud, I meet him
with submission—for that is the best a poor man can do.
With humility—and that is the utmost one of scant means can offer.
