    with tiny teeth and slender tails!

  2. Created for corruption from the moment creation

    was made—for havoc, harm, and ruin;

  3. boring through earth, ceilings, and walls—

  4. devourers of every kind of food—none of it

    can be kept safe from them—and drinkers of every drink;

  5. addicted to gnawing clothes, though the gnawing

    of clothes may equal the gnawing of hearts.

  6. My worry over them was dispelled by a blue-gray cat,

    Turkish-whiskered, in a leopard-spotted coat—

    caught sight of him took him for a jungle lion.

  8. He fixes his gaze upon the water-jars,

    the ceilings, and the doors.

  9. His claw springs unsheathed when he leaps for his

  10. No eye ever sees his two foul deposits, nor does anyone

    know what his two deposits are, save the dust.

  11. They hung earrings on him, bedecked him, and adorned

    him, hind and fore, with henna.

  12. Now he walks arrayed in a bride’s jewelry,

    and now he ambles over thresholds.

  13. How excellent a companion he is! In companion—

    ship, more faithful than most companions.
