1. Your wealth is abundant; why, then, has it

    made you haughty toward the penniless?

  2. And why, when you come, do we rise, yet if

    we come, you stretch up but never fully rise?

  3. And if we leave, you do not say what

    we say: “Bring his steed forward—bring it forward!”

  4. If you possess knowledge, who is there

    who has not learned the like of what you know?

  5. Nor are you at the withers of power,

    with us beneath you down at the hoof.

  6. We too have held office and been dismissed, just as

    you have; we did not become lesser, nor did you become greater.

  7. Our circumstances have all been equal;

    so maintain our bond on fair terms—or sever it.
