1. A slender-waisted woman passed us in the monastery,

    Bewitching the beholder, beguiling.

  2. The monks brought her out from her secluded chamber,

Honoring the monastery and its monks.

  3. She passed us, swaying gracefully as she walked,

As though her figure were a bān tree.

  4. A breeze blew upon her and made her sway,

As a sprig of sweet basil bends.

  5. So she enthralled my heart and stirred within it

Its sorrows of old and its griefs.
