1. O you who are deluded about God,

    flee from God unto God.

  2. Seek refuge in Him, and ask Him of His bounty;

for whoever seeks refuge in God is saved.

  3. Stand before Him while night spreads its wing—

how blessed is one who stands for God.

  4. Recite from the Revelation, if only a single verse,

and through it you will be clothed in light from God.

  5. Lay your face in the dust before Him, prostrate:

honored indeed is a face humbled before God.

  6. No bliss compares with intimate converse with Him

for a devout worshiper sincere to God.

  7. Keep far from sin, and do not approach it;

distance from it is nearness to God.

  8. O seeker of rank without piety,

you know not what draws one near to God.

  9. There is no true rank but rank on Judgment Day,

when judgment belongs to none but God.

  10. Then whoever is blessed will dwell in a Garden,

lofty amid the mercy of God.

  11. He will inhabit Paradise, beneath a dome

of pearl, in the neighborhood of God.

  12. But whoever is sentenced to misery

will be in blazing fire, beneath the wrath of God.

  13. He will be dragged through the Fire upon his face

by the decree long foreordained by God.

  14. How astonishing: one certain of recompense,

yet having so little fear of God—

  15. as though a messenger had come to him

with assurance of safety from God.

  16. How many a tyrant of tremendous strength

has been struck by an arrow from God.

  17. It pierced his vital spot—and how many

have God’s arrows struck dead, and still strike dead!

  18. Time assailed him, and his champions availed him

    nothing at all against God.

  19. He was forcibly wrested from palaces into the

graves, and surrendered himself to God,

  20. held there in pledge for what he had earned,

with God’s wrath feared for him.

  21. He has neither power nor strength;

all power and strength belong to God.

  22. Friend, journey through the earth, that you may see

the lessons of God upon its surface.

  23. And how many lessons lie beneath it for us,

in nations that have passed on to God—

  24. kings among them and commoners alike;

their gathering is easy for God.

  25. Look with your own eyes upon the face of heaven

and all the divine wisdom of God within it.

  26. There you see the celestial spheres revolving,

bearing witness that dominion belongs to God.

  27. Since they were set in motion, they have not paused a moment,

or less than a moment, for fear of God.

  28. No reckoning rests upon them, nor do they

fear what humankind fears from God.

  29. They, all that is hidden, and all that has appeared—

every sign lies within the grasp of God.

  30. They proclaim God’s oneness upon His Throne,

unseen though He is; all command belongs to God.

  31. No one in heaven has ever borne the name

“God”—nor on earth—other than God, by God!

  32. God’s sanctuary is truly unassailable; nothing

can draw near to the sanctuary of God.

  33. Nothing upon the lips is sweeter than the pro-

clamation of God’s oneness and glorification.

  34. Nor does the heart find peace except for one

who fills it with remembrance of God.

  35. If he sees something doubtful in his religion,

he refrains from it out of fear of God.

  36. And whether poverty or wealth befalls him,

he meets both with gratitude to God.

  37. Whoever follows such guidance

is worthy of God’s good pleasure.

  38. In this world, in his grave,

and thereafter, he remains under God’s protection.

  39. Tomorrow you will behold him secure

    because today he feared God.

  40. How ugly is an old man when he acts like a youth,

his ignorance keeping him from God,

  41. though in years he rides a full-grown mount

urging him swiftly onward to God.

  42. Why, when he neared the end, did he not see his gray hair

announcing his death, and feel shame before God?

  43. It is as though a stain has covered his heart,

    leaving him veiled from God.

  44. The ignorant man is not excused for his ignorance—

much less one who knows God.

  45. Two abodes there are, and one must be ours,

by the grace and justice of God.

  46. I do not know which will be my dwelling,

but I have put my trust in God.

  47. Marvel, then, at a servant in such a state:

how can he recoil from obedience to God?

  48. Oh, my shame if tomorrow my hope should fail

and the mercy of God not encompass me,

  49. and I should dwell in the Fire, companion to misery—

we seek refuge in God from that!

  50. How many shameful things lie concealed within us,

to be exposed when we are presented before God,

  51. in an assembly containing all creation,

their chins bowed down before God.

  52. And how many among them will you see triumphant,

enveloped by a veil from God.

  53. Praise be to God for the blessing of Is-

lam; then praise be to God.
