    And none but he bolsters a sultan's strength.

  2. The wind in its course does not match his resolve—

    Only noble steeds do, when they press hard against rivals.

  3. Our island was once al-Andalus;

    And since you grew up there, it is the two Iraqs.

  4. We offer you rhymes, fragrant as they are,

    Like wine borne in bridal procession among friends.

  5. Why does the eye of calamities watch me, though

    I have leaned on a pillar in you, like Thahlan?

  6. And how can one like me complain of thirst, despite my affection,

    While your abundant water quenches every thirsty one?

  7. Or how can a devil aspire to my horizon,

    While every devil is pelted from your sky?

  8. But how can the pupils of their eyes glance at me in scorn,

    While you are my refuge from every human being?

  9. Rouse Abu Hasan for difficult matters, and sleep

    A bride's sleep, amid ease and sweet basil.
