1. Woe to the people of the Fire, there in the Fire—

what torments they endure from the Fire!

  2. It nearly bursts apart with rage, then boils with them

like a cauldron boiling over a flame.

  3. They cry out for help, hoping to be allowed to make amends—

but alas, ruin for the stumble that leads to the Fire!

  4. Every one of them confesses, full of remorse—

if only repentance were accepted in the Fire.

  5. The most wretched plunges into it headfirst;

woe, then, to the most wretched in the Fire!

  6. Now he floats upon its embers,

and now he sinks into the Fire.

  7. Whenever he seeks to flee through it,

he flees from fire only into fire.

  8. He passes from one viper to another speckled serpent,

whose venom is fiercer than the Fire.

  9. How many speckled serpents are there, never ceasing

to sting whoever is dragged through the Fire!

  10. There is no rest in it, no respite—

far from it! There is no rest in the Fire.

  11. Its choking breaths close down over them;

such is every breath within the Fire.

  12. Glory be to Him who keeps their souls within them

in the lowest depth of the Fire.

  13. Were the mountains of the earth cast into it,

they would melt like molten copper in the Fire.

  14. Blessed is one who gains the abode of the God-fearing

and does not become fuel for the Fire.

  15. And woe to one granted a lifetime of years, yet

shown no mercy and never freed from the Fire.

  16. O people, be on your guard,

and make Paradise your fortress against the Fire.

  17. For it is among the worst of your enemies;

among all foes, none is more hostile than the Fire.

  18. Remember your Lord abundantly,

for remembrance of Him delivers from the Fire.

  19. How astonishing is the gleeful trifler

who plays heedlessly and cares nothing for the Fire!

  20. He is certain of the Fire, yet does not desist,

as though he doubted the Fire,

  21. though he plainly stands in danger of it.

Were he prudent, he would never risk the Fire.

  22. Those truly endowed with understanding are few:

they flee to God from the Fire.

  23. They divorce this world irrevocably and never

look back upon it, for fear of the Fire.

  24. They perceive among its faults that it is

a temptress calling people to the Fire.

  25. Their souls are content because

He has secured them from the terror of the Fire.

  26. By God, if I truly understood, my eye would never be lined

with sleep, for fear of the Fire.

  27. My tears would never cease—and I do not know

that I am safe from the Fire.

  28. I would neither approach water nor find it easy to swallow

whenever I remembered the molten liquid in the Fire.

  29. I would find no savor in any food whenever

I thought of the zaqqum tree in the Fire.

  30. What enjoyment can there be in luxury if

it leads to misery in the Fire?

  31. And what good can there be in joy if

it is followed by lasting grief in the Fire?

  32. Reflect, then, upon its horror, and beware

that Fire against which God has warned.

  33. For it lies in wait for those destined for it,

shoving them violently into the Fire.

  34. One such as I seeks no cherished thing

    except deliverance from the Fire.

  35. How often I have implored His mercy in humble prayer:

“O Lord, make me forbidden to the Fire!

  36. You are my Master; I have no lord

but You. Set me free from the Fire.”

  37. And You have always heard me saying:

“I seek refuge in God from the Fire.”
