And a cup of julāb, whose chill extinguished

And a cup of jullab whose coolness quenched

The blaze of wine’s hangover when it flared;

the blaze of the wine-cup’s hangover as it flared;

وكانت كبرد العدل عند طلابه

وكانت كبرد العدل عند طلابه

وعود وصال الحب بعد ذهابه

وعود وصال الحب بعد ذهابه

It was like justice’s cool relief to those who seek it,

and it was like the coolness of justice for its seekers,

And love’s reunion after it had gone.

and the return of love’s union after its departure.
