1. Forty came upon me, and I had not

    moved a foot away from a single misstep.

  2. Whenever I renewed its count,

    it renewed my provision for me—in the form of pain.

  3. I had hoped to reach it

    dwelling as a body formed of repentance,

  4. listening to counsel, hearing it with an ear

    that deafness had weighed down.

  5. But a soul refused—one that had made

    its adversary, through ignorance, its judge.

  6. It commits sins ceaselessly,

    then feels no remorse.

  7. All wakeful moments are a dream,

    and an existence resembling nonexistence.

  8. Had I seen sin come to an end,

    I would not have deemed life spent.

  9. My soul rebelled, though it knew;

    and my heart transgressed, though it knew.

  10. Yet despite all this, I have a hope

    that awaits beneficence and generosity.
