1. Put your trust, if one day a calamity befalls you,

In Him to whom belong creation and judgment over His creatures.

  2. And submit to Him, to His ordainment and His decree;

For between the two, war and peace unfold for you.

  3. And seek no relief from anguish from anyone but Him,

Lest you return from him disappointed, with humiliation your lot.

  4. Weak, hoping for rescue from another weak one—

Surely perception has erred, and understanding is reversed.

  5. O you whose eyelids sleep while you are awake,

And how many sleep in spirit though no sleep has overtaken them!

  6. Judgment is nothing but your Lord's judgment alone.

So submit to Him; you must place no hope in anyone else.

  7. And how many are deluded in seeking Amr and Khalid!

So beware: let no delusion carry your thoughts away.

  8. Who, then, brought you into being when you were a drop of seed,

Weak, with neither flesh upon you nor bone?

  9. And who nourished you for nine months,

While your mother had neither awareness nor knowledge?

  10. And who reared you for two years as you suckled,

With no drink but breast milk, and no food?

  11. And who saved you from youth's recklessness,

While your [cat?] is an archer whose arrows do not strike?

  12. And who cast love upon you,

Which father and mother bestowed on you in turn?

  13. And who gave you reason and discernment,

So your well-known description and name spread abroad?

  14. And who granted you guidance as you came of age,

So you affirmed God's oneness while the adversary denied it?

  15. It is God—exalted is God!—so abide at His door.

His is the beginning of His creation, and His is the end.

  16. How often He preserved life's last traces when the soul was departing,

And how often He brought breezes when the heart was sorrowful!

  17. And how many a desperate supplication He has answered,

So through it you attained wishes beneath which lie the stars!

  18. And how many a lapse you repeated after another,

Reprieve and forbearance came to your rescue amid them!

  19. Do you know this, then act against it?

Your judgment has surely been lost, and prudence cast aside.

  20. So in truth you have neither love nor longing,

Nor any share or portion of sound thought.

  21. Give up reliance on the creature; you are like him,

And seek Him whom intent guides you to seek.

  22. And hope in none but God, in every circumstance,

For placing hope where it does not belong is wrongdoing.

  23. And in Joseph the Truthful lies the greatest proof,

That no creature has control in a case like his.

  24. And in his saying 'Mention me' to his king's cupbearer,

Is evidence for anyone resolved upon righteous deeds.

  25. So mend the corruption of your deeds through repentance,

For whoever betrayed another's wealth is strengthened by resolve.
