1. For you, my heart's affection and love have been made pure.

    And on your account, censure and reproach were summed up for my soul.

  2. I departed from you, and calamities were many;

    But even the easiest part of separation's ordeal is hard.

  3. Shall I weep for separation from you or the heart's departure? Indeed, I—

    By love's decree, have no heart left after parting from you.

  4. So take no account of it after you have appeased it;

    For after peace is concluded, war is not fitting.

  5. If the days are to blame for separation from you,

    It is excuse enough for me that I bear no guilt.

  6. Examine the caravan's burns; they disclose their secret:

    For outwardly they are a caravan, and inwardly anguish.

  7. Even if the reaches of my land lie far from you,

    I have no valley in this world but yours.

  8. And though long separation brings weariness,

    Yet, despite long separation, I am lovesick for you.

  9. It is illness enough for me that your dwellings lie far away,

    And cure enough for me that they should be near.

  10. Ah, O foremost scholar, and you whose

    Love is healing, and whose might is gain.

  11. I wished, through correspondence, to affirm your affection,

    And what good is affection that letters do not affirm?

  12. So grant me the gift of a reply, for I have no

    Imam over this world but you, nor any spiritual pole.
