1. A plight for whose like too slight is

the punishment that befell its people.

  2. And a calamity that weighed heavily upon me—

so I cannot bear its weight.

  3. Alas for my days, which

I never left free of heedlessness.

  4. They passed, and never was made clear to me

a single subtle point in their unraveling.

  5. I did not awaken during any of them

until I was bereft of them all.

  6. Alas for the soul that

does not desist from its ignorance.

  7. It dallies, while death's bow

cuts down souls with its arrows.

  8. And it is as though it has already been joined

to those who passed away before it.

  9. O dear friend, called upon—

one such as you, in a plight such as this—

  10. help your brother with a prayer

that waters his earth with its downpour.

  11. For upon him, woven from sins, are

tunics he has not worn out.

  12. And God bears witness that I

    am bewildered because of them.
