1. Ask the scholars of love about what I conceal.

    For I am bewildered by my distance and my nearness.

  2. Sick with love, between fear and hope,

    I go at evening to a garden, and at morning to a grave.

  3. I went ahead, but along a barren path to love,

    Alone among the two kinds: jinn and humankind.

  4. I went ahead, yet was barred by a veil for a reason;

    And success is not attained at a paltry price.

  5. I asked you for union, though I am unworthy of its bestowal.

    And darkness may aspire to the sun's brightness.

  6. The way of my lament over you is not hidden:

    For my inscription comes from my tears, and my parchment from my cheeks.

  7. Sleep, night, and sorrow are all the same to me;

    So I pass the evening as I pass the forenoon, and the forenoon as the evening.

  8. My silence over sleep, night, and sorrow—

    So I pass the evening as I pass the forenoon, and the forenoon as the evening.

  9. My silence under the humiliation of the veil is speech.

    When my state speaks, the senses cannot be silent.

  10. I poured out my heart as tears and spilled it,

    Perhaps tomorrow will aid me against today and yesterday.

  11. I freely gave my soul to love and reckoned it a sacrifice

    For your sake; but for you, I would not have reckoned my soul a sacrifice.
