يا مُدمِنَ الخمر غَيرَ آلِ

يا مُدمِنَ الخمر غَيرَ آلِ

في تركه أمر ذي الجلالِ

في تركه أمر ذي الجلالِ

O you addicted to wine, heedless

O wine addict, sparing no effort

of the Lord of Majesty’s command to abandon it,

in forsaking the command of the Lord of Majesty,

أبشر بفقرٍ وهتك سترٍ

أبشر بفقرٍ وهتك سترٍ

وقبح ذكرٍ وسوء حال

وقبح ذكرٍ وسوء حال

look forward to poverty and the tearing away of your veil,

Rejoice in poverty and the rending of your veil,

an ugly reputation and a wretched state,

and a foul reputation and a wretched state,

ومورد في المعاد تفضي

ومورد في المعاد تفضي

منه إلى طينة الخبال

منه إلى طينة الخبال

and a destination at the Resurrection from which you will pass

and a watering place in the Hereafter—you will pass

to Ṭīnat al-Khabāl—the mire of Hell.

from it to the mire of corruption.

فراجع الحقَّ لا تعلّل

فراجع الحقَّ لا تعلّل

نفسك في الفوز بالمحال

نفسك في الفوز بالمحال

So return to the truth; do not beguile

So return to the truth; do not delude

yourself with attaining the impossible.

yourself with impossible hopes of salvation.

واضرع إلى الله واستقله

واضرع إلى الله واستقله

فإنّه خير مستقال

فإنّه خير مستقال

Humbly implore God and ask Him to pardon you;

And plead humbly with God and seek His pardon,

He is the best from whom pardon may be sought.

for He is the best of those whose pardon is sought.

وسَلهُ فوزاً يجبكَ فضلاً

وسَلهُ فوزاً يجبكَ فضلاً

وهل جواب بلا سؤال

وهل جواب بلا سؤال

Ask Him for success; in grace He will answer you—

And ask Him for salvation; He will answer you out of grace.

and can there be an answer without a plea?

And is there an answer without a request?

يا صاح إن لم تكن تبالي

يا صاح إن لم تكن تبالي

عنك فمن ذا الذي يبالي

عنك فمن ذا الذي يبالي

O friend, if you do not care

O friend, if you do not care

for yourself, then who is it that will care?

about yourself, then who is it that cares?
