1. ِ

I longed for the time that once was, then passed away.

So here I am in the darkness, seeking dawn.

  2. Ablaze with my heart's fire, I cannot bear sorrow.

Drowning in the water of tears, I do not know how to swim.

  3. I have been shut out, with no means of meeting you,

Though, in my love for you, I thirst or suffer the sun's heat.

  4. My heart and my eyelids are flame and tears:

So, at times a downpour, and at times scorching heat.

  5. The mention of love was sweet to me until I experienced it;

Then I knew for certain that earnestness is not like jest.

  6. A beloved—for love of him I forsook all creation,

And for his sake I turned away from all mention of them.

  7. I enjoined my heart to keep watch at his door:

May he who shuts the doors open them in turn.

  8. I was envied for the tears I shed over you,

And that is because love has proved true through torrents of tears.

  9. I beg your mercy: I cannot endure being apart from you.

So if I do not gain your love, then grant me pardon.

  10. My gaze and my hearing are forbidden to the two feasts,

For you, my lord, are my Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
