1. When shall love’s anguish clear from a beholder’s sight,

    while his innermost parts blaze amid tears?

  2. The perils of this love are not hidden;

    in love, even the discerning beholder goes blind.

  3. Tears erased the body’s outline, save for a remnant,

    like a line of script appearing, dotted with tears.

  4. Love’s course increases only in remoteness,

    though across that distance my heart never wearies.

  5. I am a lover of a beloved: whenever I leave him,

    I hold back in fear, while passion presses forward.

  6. He is with me every moment, whether far from me or near,

    for my heart keeps hidden any thought of forgetting him.

  7. What you desire of my heart is the whole of my desire,

    and safest among the masters of hearts is he who surrenders.

  8. My well-being is impossible if I lose you for an instant;

    whoever’s full moon is absent from him dwells in darkness.

  9. The impossibility of love is, within the soul, refreshment and repose;

    through it my body suffers, while my spirit is blessed.

  10. My desire is intimate converse—and in it lies my death;

    thus is this love both honey and bitter colocynth.
