1. Ever since you departed, O Abu al-Abbas, I have been

    between hope of reunion and despair;

  2. and tears for our parting stream down—but

    the heat of my sighs has dried them.

  3. How fares a man from whom Tlemce—

    —n lies far away, while he dwells in Fez?

  4. What I have suffered since you grew distant

    from yearning has exceeded all measure.

  5. No—by a gazelle who veils a cheek with a temple-lock,

    thus sheltering a freshly plucked rose with myrtle;

  6. and by eyelids that learned the art of sorcery

    and thereby surpassed the minds of humankind—

  7. now that I have lost you, my place is nothing but

    the cubit's place within the measure.
