1. O you who spurn counsel and admonition,

dwelling forever between “Take!” and “Give!”

  2. dragging your robes in exultation and pride,

deaf to the resounding of exhortations.

  3. Has the company of your intimates beguiled you, though it is a company

that, if you reflect, must end in utter separation?

  4. Has an insidious passion made you feel safe from the night’s surprise?

How many besides you have been deluded by that night visitation!

  5. As though you did not see, at every moment,

death’s arrows coming from every direction.

  6. You hope for Paradise and fear the Fire,

but can any quest succeed without the means?

  7. Cling as firmly as you can—perhaps you will be saved—

to the rope of enduring righteous deeds.

  8. And pledge to God that you will extinguish

with the water of tears the fire of your sins,

  9. that perhaps you may win a home in Eden

    and attain happiness and salvation.
