1. Has the time not come for a lovesick heart to quench its thirst?

The corners of his eyes overflow, yet he thirsts.

  2. An eye struck him, sheathing the blade of his union.

And a lover's heart, whoever he may be, is a grief-stricken heart.

  3. I love a beloved whom I do not name, out of awe.

And concealing love is more hurtful and more wounding to the heart.

  4. I am jealous over him even of my own passion—how could I not

Be jealous over him of anyone else, and be healed?

  5. I spend the night suffering for him the burning within my ribs.

And between my eyelids flows a stream of tears that will not cease.

  6. I see him with my heart every day and night,

Though I am driven away from the watering place of union.

  7. A letter came to me from him; I paid it its due:

So here I am, weeping as much as I can and reading.

  8. O you whose love has lodged in my hearing and my eye

And my heart—so I have no escape or refuge from it.

  9. Rescue me with a single day of meeting you,

For one day of meeting you is enough for me.

  10. I console myself with hopes of union with you and your favor.

And who will secure that for me? It is untroubled bliss.
