1. I concealed love until its signs appeared,

    so a love once in the realm of doubt was confirmed.

  2. I lined my eyelids with sleeplessness as punishment

    for a secret seen amid tossing and the shedding of tears.

  3. I became enamored of a beloved whom I do not name, out of awe;

    yet no seal can hold back the fragrance of musk.

  4. I referred to the beloved by another's name, out of jealousy,

    and my heart, in loving him, is free of divided devotion.

  5. It weighs heavily on my heart, yet is sweet upon my lips,

    so I cannot part from my love and remembrance.

  6. Even in his nearness, fear of his distance clothed me in wasting sickness,

    and after union, nothing wounds more deeply than abandonment.

  7. Both states of this love are states of delight,

    so it is all the same to me whether I laugh or weep.

  8. It is sorrow enough that I am a captive of ardent longing,

    and I have no hope of ransom or release.

  9. I lifted the heart's veil from what lay behind it,

    then I beheld a sea that cannot be crossed by ships.

  10. The fulfillment of wishes, if you seek what you wish for,

    is when the slave is effaced in the Master of dominion.
