1. To God, then, let all creatures raise their palms;

    and by God let the hardships of every strait be driven back.

  2. In God let the hope of His servants aspire—

    can the creature ever lack a Creator’s mercy?

  3. O you who seek refuge at a door other than His,

    take hold—for you have missed the true path.

  4. You hope that distress will be lifted by one powerless,

    and hope to gain provision from one who cannot provide.

  5. You affirm divine oneness in word and intention,

    yet act the acts of a man who is not sincere.

  6. Awake! The path of truth is radiant and clear

    when all the other ways become confused.

  7. Reliance is placed on Him whom nothing resembles;

    you will find a mighty refuge on a towering summit.

  8. Here—if you desire delight, let roam

    your gaze through gardens of His signs.

  9. You see, with no falsehood: there is nothing but God,

    and hear, from no speaker, “Exalted is God.”

  10. For in God’s dominion lies a sea of wonders;

    the mind that tastes them reels when trying to speak.

  11. The pavilion of God’s light stands before His majesty,

    yet minds are bewildered even before the pavilion.

  12. At every moment, bounties from His kindness are ours—

    magnificent gifts of grace beyond all subtle reckoning.

  13. He bestows favors while we disobey Him, then graciously pardons.

    Blessed are You, ever forgiving the sins of all creatures.

  14. O you who hope to return to union,

    listen well: union is the severing of attachments.

  15. Rise, then, in gratitude to God for every blessing

    made easy—one arriving close upon another.

  16. Among our Lord’s blessings upon us is a caliph,

    granted in succession, one following a predecessor:

  17. an imam in the furthest West, whose hands have brought

    the hands of the East willingly beneath his sway.

  18. Through him God united all hearts upon guidance;

    without him, no clamorer’s repentance would be known.

  19. Were they to stray beyond him, they would run loose in hypocrisy,

    for his sword holds force against every hypocrite.

  20. Stored up for him is manifest victory over his foes;

    if you wish, ask the depths of their cloven crowns.

  21. Can his enemies, lagging far behind, ever thwart

    glories inscribed for him in the decrees of old?
