1. I denied love until its witnesses appeared.

So I openly avowed concealment, while the truth shone clear.

  2. My eyelids are sore from the humiliation of the veil,

So there is no tear that is not mingled with blood.

  3. I laid both my hands upon my heart in pain,

So I saw nothing but a blazing ember.

  4. I was fashioned to love the one whose servant I am.

So my gaze is downcast, and my speech falters.

  5. Love for him repaid me with anguish and ardent longing,

Yet I am in greater need of something other than these two rewards.

  6. Through you I joined the two opposites, compelled by necessity:

So my eyelid is rain-drenched, and my heart is roasted.

  7. I raced with longings, giving them full rein,

And nearness to you is sought, while love for you leaves me breathless.

  8. The gardens of manifestation are prepared for the heart,

[Opening words unclear] I climb and ascend in his good pleasure.

  9. Even if I could reap all wishes in a single glance,

The sight of you would still be more splendid and more delightful to the mind.

  10. Your beauty is life to me, and your turning away is death to me.

So you are the one who afflicts, and you are the one who brings relief.
