1. God's blessings are held fast by thanking Him.

For God is thanked for His bounty and praised.

  2. Our needy palms were stretched out to Him,

So from His bounty He granted them what they were accustomed to.

  3. And He brought us relief with clouds pouring rain.

With gladness they flash, and good tidings thunder.

  4. They brought the thirsty earth its quenching draught,

And the clouds' helping hand upon the soil cannot be denied.

  5. So the sky, its rays gleaming, is silvered,

And the water, overflowing in torrents, is gilded.

  6. And the earth is decked in spring's jewels, as though

the clouds' drops were pearls and chrysolite.

  7. And the garden, its thickets dewy, smiles,

And the branches, supple in their bends, sway.

  8. They spat out the remnants of their draught into their blossoms,

So they seem like scattered jewels.

  9. People's minds were bewildered by their movements:

Do they sway from drunkenness, or from gratitude?

  10. So the people of idleness say, 'They bend,'

And the people of truth say, 'They prostrate themselves.'

  11. And if you are guided to what is right, they indeed

stand and sit in homage to their Creator.

  12. This is the grace that never ends;

This is the generosity that never runs out.

  13. Summon your heart to the task of thanking Him,

If you know the worth of what you wear around your neck.

  14. And shake your hands free of the servants, for each of them

unties the bond in helplessness, while you tie it in ignorance.

  15. For they and you are slaves of one Master;

So leave the slaves; there is only the Master.

  16. And if you turn in need to anyone besides Him, it is only because

the farthest road has led your mind astray.

  17. God's blessings, as you see, are abundant,

And those unseen are greater than what you witness.

  18. So look at the traces of His mercy, about which

there is neither doubt nor hesitation.

  19. Oh, would that I knew—with the proof so telling—

on what grounds the unbeliever doubts.

  20. Who is it that doubts that his God

is One, while the tongues of inanimate things proclaim His oneness?

  21. Each one's state and speech declare plainly

that there is no Lord to be worshiped but God.
