1. My tears would do nothing but pour forth; perhaps they

    bear witness before my beloved to my hidden love.

  2. I drew near, but he drove me away; I returned, but he turned me back.

    So he does not bring me near, nor do I draw away.

  3. I was stricken by the loss of one I had found;

    so no tear ceases to flow, nor does yearning die down.

  4. Love's creeping between the ribs kindles

    a blaze of yearning in which the heart has a watering place.

  5. Leave me be, you two, for whoever tastes love and then fails to gain

    union with a beloved—how can he not sigh?

  6. The claims of sorrow I hold against you are well founded:

    for my heart flutters, and my eyelid is kept sleepless.

  7. My blood is spilled because of you, and my tears with its spilling;

    so my heart is mended in you, precisely where it is ruined.

  8. Love's buried treasures, in the tombs of the ribs,

    have, through you, a resurrection and an appointed meeting each day.

  9. My darkness, when you grant union, is an everlasting day,

    and my day, when you withdraw, is a night without end.

  10. Your nearness is the utmost of what I love and desire;

    for if I attain it, it is everlasting bliss.
