1. O you who drink wine in your hours of heedlessness,

    hiding behind doors and curtains,

  2. when night deepens and its tresses stream far,

    you seclude yourself with cup, strings, and flute.

  3. Do you not know that God is watching,

    reckoning your deeds, both open and secret?

  4. Even were you veiled in the darknesses of the sea,

    beyond every reach of hearing and sight,

  5. nothing hidden of yours would be hidden from the All-Merciful;

    rather, every deed of yours is ordained according to a measure.

  6. What does it avail you that all people are ignorant

    of what you have concealed, when it is not hidden from the Creator?

  7. Let not God’s having concealed you for a time embolden you to transgress:

    how often has it come, allowing no postponement or persistence!

  8. So turn back from sin willingly, in a repentant return,

    or you will turn from it against your will.

  9. And if you refuse all but persistence, keeping it as your companion,

    do you think you have the endurance to bear the Fire?
