1. I resolved to conceal my love, but it was betrayed by

    Two credible witnesses—sleeplessness and tears.

  2. Though I spared no effort to restrain myself, I merely

    Turned away, though enduring estrangement was beyond my power.

  3. I was reproached for my long yearning; and if I have

    Yearned, how many examples I have in anguish!

  4. A heart defied me in love, so I obeyed it.

    How strange that the root submits to the branch!

  5. I filled my heart with the beloved in ardent longing,

    And exalted him beyond the perception of my gaze and my hearing.

  6. May he, when none but he is found in the heart,

    Treat me, after solitude, to union.

  7. I knew you when I found no alternative;

    And the possessor of beauty and goodness is recognized by instinct.

  8. I ascended with my secret toward the one who is its secret,

    And I am indeed content with giving and withholding.

  9. Seeing you has wearied me, yet I do not withdraw

    From the farthest goal, even if I am in death's throes.

  10. Love's torment is sweet, and I know its taste;

    And honey's sweetness is found in the pain of wax.
