1. By your life, why have the Russians returned and taken pity

on a mischief-maker who schemes while terrified?

  2. So, O mountain of the rebel, and O stronghold of harm,

are you impregnable against the unyielding Turks?

  3. And indeed, what you have reinforced and gathered

is a flock for these fierce lions.

  4. And what harm can come to a throne fixed upon the star

if ribs burn with hatred against it?

  5. A place such as noble virtues and generosity approve,

and a vile neighbor, as corruption has willed.

  6. And the Turks have not tired of staying; rather,

it is hateful to them that a good deed should be wasted.

  7. So, O thirsty one, complaining to the sword of burning thirst,

you will be quenched when blood flows from you.

  8. And O you who incite against the Turks men who fall slain if they attack,

you will surely lie slain when the reckoning comes.

  9. And not every day is placed at tyrants' disposal,

nor is every day an intercessor for the guilty.

  10. Is there, then, any lesson for them in what has passed?

Perhaps their devil will vanish, so that they may obey.
