1. A greeting to you in private and in public,

and a pledge, O protectors of the people and the homeland.

  2. And glory for what you have willed, and honor

for what you are preparing for the fair future.

  3. The festivals circled your celebration and gathered,

auspicious, along the realm's frontiers and in the cities.

  4. And the house, thronged, welcomed the delegations,

with every joyful soul, filling eye and ear.

  5. Every group represents the people there,

from public services, aspirations, and professions.

  6. And opinion is united there, sound and weighty,

by sincere leadership from those true to their word and trusted.

  7. Two days passed for the champions of the cause amid

battles of victory, not chaos or strife.

  8. And the first opportunity came, preparing the way

for another in time's hidden heart, whose hour had not yet come.

  9. And roads stretched out for riders, and gentler grew

the raging storms and rain squalls for the ships.

  10. And he yielded to justice—he whose harsh measures had long weighed

upon the land, which neither submitted nor bent.

  11. The unbowed are satisfied, their might having exhausted him

    amid adversity, misfortunes, and trials.

  12. May he, after the experiences that have gone before,

cleanse the air of his fetid current.

  13. O you who come in throngs, with hopes fulfilled,

filling the squares, the horizons, and the summits.

  14. You shouldered the burden for your peers, and they have

the two partners' entitlement to reward and recompense.

  15. And you made ready only for something connected

with their fine work, bound up with it.

  16. And you have dispensed with vengeance, which is blood,

through peace of mind after grief and sorrow.

  17. And one who hopes for joy followed by distress

is like one who hopes for strength from a place of weakness.

  18. And one who craves power from someone he does not trust

is like someone drinking poison to cure obesity.

  19. I am the one returning to the valley its trust,

among you, to satisfy myself, not so it may reward me.

  20. And had I given my hand to any but reformers,

an idol-worshipper would have been better than I.

  21. And I have girded my heart and come to you

with all that is saved and stored within it.

  22. And I had been postponing my intention to a later date,

until I secured an appointed moment in time.

  23. I did something before, and have my excuse for it, so I do not

say, 'Would that what I did had never happened.'

  24. And I have accepted for myself nothing but my inborn nature,

and accepted no robe but my own upon my body.

  25. And more deserving of that reproach than I was the one

I saw filling my gaze, though he did not see me.

  26. I offered him counsel out of kindness, but he ignored it;

so I came to him with a harsh, restraining warning.

  27. And none among dear friends, to my mind, is more unjust than

a complainer whose confidences I share, yet who disowns me.

  28. In God's keeping are the ways I have set right

for both sides, and the favors I have bestowed.

  29. Who will bring me a reconciliation that restores their unity,

like the reconciliation between the Hijazis and Yemen,

  30. so that no brother spends the night seeking harm for a brother,

and no father spends the night bearing rancor toward a son?

  31. And I follow only those who follow me,

and I honor only those who honor me.
