1. I stayed back for a day after toil and hardship,

So they said, “The tireless, steadfast man has given up.”

  2. Those reproachers of mine denied me any rest,

Though they knew I was the trustworthy one under threat.

  3. And nothing came from my people, as they drove me

Toward my death, but repeated cries.

  4. And they pushed me from my place among them,

So I left behind what I tended and what I cared for.

  5. So no gathering of their young men takes me in,

Nor does a temple welcome me among the gray-haired.

  6. I placate my foes over what I see from them today,

For fear of what tomorrow may bring from them.

  7. And I am content with safety alone from them,

While others rise against them, rebellious and defiant.

  8. I knew those with good and evil at their disposal,

So I went to them loyally, seeking their affection.

  9. Nor did it benefit them that I was unfettered and free to choose,

Nor did it concern them that I was imprisoned and bound,

  10. And that I am indeed content with them so long as they show kindness;

And I speak with them in confidence, and owe them a debt of gratitude.

  11. Leave me alone for a night or several nights,

To regain my strength in that time and renew myself.

  12. Had I wished to remain happy, I would have left you,

But I remain, so that I may suffer and you may be happy.
