I remained in sorrow for the loss of Muhammad,
for he was my father's firstborn and the first of my brothers,
wishing that I had known him
and gained his companionship and affection,
until this youngest came, his namesake,
and his likeness in beauty and health.
So I forgot their first through their last, and their eld-
est through their youngest, and my anguish ceased,
until, when I revived my hopes through him,
he met death and passed away, swift as a glance.
A likeness he wished to complete—and completed—
in his lifespan, his death, and the illness.
