1. God granted a doe a fawn one

day; she brought him to a boar.

  2. Then she said, “I have heard that you possess a sound

and noble mind, and abundant learning.

  3. Therefore I chose you to be the tutor who

will care for my dear little son.”

  4. She left, after praying that her son would

    prosper under that renowned teacher.

  5. The fawn remained, imitating his tutor

and following his example in all things.

  6. His mother came to see what he

    had become, beguiled by pride.

  7. She saw him, his body smeared with filth,

    lazy in a wretched place.

  8. She called him, but he did not answer; so the sorrow

swelled in her sad and broken heart.

  9. The young deer did not know his mother; whenever she

approached him, she met with nothing but aversion.

  10. She wept when she realized that she

had committed one of the gravest forbidden acts.

  11. Then she cried to him, “May I be rid of you, so

I need not endure the crowd’s gloating!

  12. Go away! May no lover ever liken a beloved

to you in the verse of any famous poet.”
