1. They have forgotten me, so I receive neither a greeting nor a reply.

    As though today I had raised a barrier before them.

  2. They paid no heed to their brother and distracted their father from him,

    Yet he is the wisest of the brothers, the best guided.

  3. And they denied—after all the blood I shed

    And my tears—what time concealed and what it revealed.

  4. And they barred me—after so long begrudging

    Mention of me among the troops—from seeing the troops.

  5. Events of every kind pass me by, and I have

    No account in them to be recited, nor a work to be offered.

  6. And losing what remains of my health is easier for me

    Among the people than losing my integrity and my pledge.

  7. And I am indeed detached from this world and from them;

    So I neither long for nearness nor complain of distance.

  8. And I used to keep away from their homes against my will;

    So now I keep away from their homes by choice.
