and its swift progress in civilization,

  2. and our wish that the Russians should fail,

lest they become the ones in command,

  3. we fear the tyranny of the yellow peoples

over the white peoples after victory,

  4. as they tyrannized in bygone times

    and overran the western lands.

  7. and surrendered to the rule of illusions,

and left the light for darkness,

  8. until they settled among them and so learned

the law of Islam, then embraced Islam,

  9. and left Baghdad as believers,

filled with admiration for this religion's excellence.

  10. Indeed, today we have seen the like of yesterday,

    amid hardship, terror, and misery.

  11. If the Magians triumph over the Christians,

they will become supporters of every Muslim.

  12. And the creed that decreed conquest

is more fitting for them than one commanding forgiveness.

  13. And the religion most firmly rooted in hearts

is what the innate nature of peoples accepts.

  14. And what place among them has an ascetic faith? Were

its follower to live by it, humankind would trample him.
