Thank you, Saʿid of the King, after due greetings,
Thanks, Sa'id al-Mulk, after a greeting,
from one whose loyalty to his beloved is steadfast.
from one whose loyalty to the minister is steadfast.
An illness touched your noble left hand,
An ailment visited your generous left hand,
and every right hand complained of it to Abbas.
so every right hand complained to Abbas.
Would Abbas visit you merely to honor you, and not
Would Abbas visit you to honor you, without
find you a full moon in darkness, a lion in his lair?
a full moon in darkness and a lion of the lair greeting you?
I kissed his palm, wherein for us abide
You kissed his palm, which holds for us
al-Rashid’s bounty and al-Maʾmun’s mercy.
the kindness of al-Rashid and the mercy of al-Ma'mun.
Each day, you have from him a proof of
Each day you receive from him proof of
Egypt’s admiration for your blessed tenure.
Egypt's admiration for your auspicious tenure.
So remain safe for Egypt, for she is worthy of you,
So stay well for Egypt, for through you she is free,
and guard my hope for Egypt—it is precious.
and cherish a hope precious to Egypt.
