1. You survived, and so saved this homeland.

And may your life endure as long as time.

  2. Nor did the evildoer’s instrument go beyond

the narrow bounds of his secret and open affairs.

  3. And had it known, it would have carried out what he intended

of evil upon his own soul and body.

  4. His kin disowned his blood,

and his garment and dwelling disowned him.

  5. And the country’s loyalty increased your might

to ward off its terrors and ordeals.

  6. And the inciter of criminals feared punishment,

not a contagious illness—so he took an injection.

  7. He challenged you in jealousy until he weakened,

and opposed you in anger until he grew feeble.

  8. And he would strut, claiming glory,

so his grief and sorrow laid him low.

  9. And he failed who wished to sell the country

for power, unjustly—and wretched was the price.

  10. And his band nearly deserted him

in despair, and they shunned the idol.

  11. He mismanaged politics until

people deemed his politics the worst of trades.

  12. Can one who steals money in the name of jihad

ever be entrusted with a state?

  13. And you, the healer of affairs of every kind—

    can you, then, heal rancor?

  14. So plan for peace in the homeland, and await

its consequences after warding off strife.

  15. And you are the one whose honoring is due,

and its prescribed duties and customs have been established.

  16. And you and your brothers, the reformers,

are Egypt’s guarantee of a good future.
