1. Must the Nile witness, every day, a brilliant son

    who lives, and we place our hopes in him—then dies, and we grieve?

  2. You make no appearance at the living man's celebration,

    nor are you a refuge at the dead man's mourning.

  3. These very seats have wearied of your lingering;

    if only you could feel them as they complain and implore!

  4. If you wish the Nile to pardon you,

    and the sons of Egypt to esteem and exalt you,

  5. then yield the reins of affairs to those fit to hold them—

    those who, when the tyrant thunders, do not waver.

  6. Then you would have seen the honor and compassion

    received by that martyr escorted in procession.
