1. You took your share of orphanhood and bereavement.

    And one such as you is mourned, and one such as I mourns him.

  2. Both of us in this world are bound to an appointed hour;

    you sought it after me, yet reached it before me.

  3. I devoted my longing to my companions, not to

    my offspring, for I have neither a boy nor a child.

  4. And I came to bid the men farewell, while I myself

    will ready my baggage tomorrow for the travelers' end.

  5. My companions were part of my very self, and they departed;

    so, with my companions gone, I weep for my whole self.

  6. We are stricken by separation from loved ones, just as

    we are stricken by enemies through captivity and killing.

  7. And I am in an abode whose contents I comprehend,

    and await another that my mind cannot encompass.

  8. So, O ambergris of the valley, behind you lingers a fragrant breath

    through the ages; time neither effaces its scent nor wears it away.

  9. And in what could I find solace for your loss,

    when the one who consoles is now preparing to depart?

  10. I remembered my pledge to you, which none receives

    from me but the freeborn and the noble among my kin.

  11. Let my tears for you, and my blood, suffice you—

    this watering of your love in a time of drought.

  12. The end of every living being is the point you have reached;

    each strives toward it, in haste or at leisure.

  13. And I remain among your books for contentment;

    and what I recite from them and dictate is for remembrance.

  14. I keep alive for you the excellence you leave behind,

    though, in matters of excellence, my plight is like yours.

  15. Yet the world and its people have not lost their worth to me,

    though I have gained nothing from them in word or deed.
