  1. Every youth who excelled

    in poetry continued to be called Ahmad,

  2. until you championed it and became

    through it a master over us.

  3. So extend to us—to spare us

    the humiliation of pleading—a hand.

  4. Had you frightened with nothing but verse

    the sanctuary's foes, it would have sufficed against them.
