1. Peace be upon you, people of Egypt, for a while—

The apologies of a sick man, and the anguish of one grief-stricken.

  2. For two years I bore both maladies, never abandoning

My struggle for the dispossessed, the far-off, and the imprisoned.

  3. I asked you for sixty days’ leave,

Which the doctor urged me to take, that he might treat me.

  4. Then either comes a life of ease thereafter,

Or despair, after that, enfolds me.

  5. Nothing ails me but the concern of one true to his people,

Enraptured by the freedom of the sacred Nile Valley.
