1. Thus let festivals be held for you,

and let the ages perpetuate devotion to you.

  2. And may the day of your accession to rule be hallowed,

and may the land remember the good it brought.

  3. It brought her what restores her hopes,

and fresh youth among the things restored.

  4. And lofty fortresses are raised within her,

in its name, in strength, and the pillars rise.

  5. And it wards calamities away from her and protects

her glory from the reach of enviers.

  6. And it governs the people with gentleness and justice,

as the people wish and desire.

  7. And it shows them the paths of goodness and piety,

and the ways to eminence and right guidance.

  8. O son of the finest clans among Uthman's people,

and of the noblest who ruled upon the earth!

  9. Indeed, the realm you have attained is lofty,

    secured by fathers and forefathers.

  10. You have had nine fair years within it,

for the subjects, stern against the foes.

  11. You have raised its stature; may you ever bestow

upon its inhabitants whatever further blessings they seek.

  12. Endurance for the son of Ali is heralded

by newly won eminence and inherited glory.

  13. An age passed over the Nile before your reign

when those who sought water could not quench their thirst.

  14. And in its valley, barren and drought-stricken,

the scouts complained there of hunger.

  15. They now live in comfort and joy,

and have found their life sweet and deemed it good.

  16. And the herald of guidance summoned them to you, so

opposing sides united in allegiance to you.

  17. Live on! Without you, for your people

no eye would find comfort, nor would any heart find rest.

  18. In you lie our great hopes, and within us

are love, pledged loyalty, and obedience to you.

  19. And with you is deliverance from every aggressor,

and to you we turn for calm and repose.

  20. Do you fear the foes, though you are fully aware

of what the schemers have planned and plotted?

  21. They found their plans, so long as you remain in Egypt,

impossible; so they surrendered, or nearly did.

  22. And they donned a friend's demeanor, so nothing

appears from them but satisfaction and affection.

  23. So, at the festival of your feast, she

struts, and the chanting of her praises rises high.

  24. And her throne salutes you, and to you whisper

her sons, her plants, and lifeless things.

  25. So for her beautiful banners there is applause,

and for the troops, clamor and a steady march.

  26. Onward, Abbas! Indeed, your striving for Islam

is a blessed endeavor and a holy struggle.

  27. And your persistence in maintaining ties with the Sultan

is the most precious gain the Muslims have received.

  28. And his kindness toward you, and your fostering devotion to him,

    follow in succession and extend.

  29. Whenever your union grows firm in the

faith, hatreds bring its foe to ruin.

  30. This is the Prophet's practice, and the hope

of the subjects—indeed, reason and sound judgment.

  31. And a weapon that repels every raider,

and a beacon for the East, and preparedness.

  32. May my prestige endure, Abbas, through your reign,

and my hope, blessing, and pride.

  33. So my turning to you is the finest thing

that certainty and belief have earned me.
